Due to the excessive time it takes for me to put together the sheet, this month's edition is just a notice of things that are happening this month. If you know someone who might be interested in the classes or joining the club please point them to our web site or print the information and give it to them.

The scouting party noted some needed dock, hoist, and club house chimney repairs as the most urgent items in addition to the normal boat launching, cleaning and dock positioning. Bring carpentry tools, any spare 2x4s, plywood, painting supplies, etc. to work party if you can. Other projects that need doing as time, money and supplies permit include: waterfront clean up of drill pipes and damaged shoring lumber, and deck construction.
Our web site is evolving slowly, but surely. Alaskan summer time constraints, as we all well know, mean major enhancements will come over the fall and winter. Jot down any ideas of what you'd like to see in the site and let me know. E-Mail link at bottom of this page. I'll continue to archive previous editions of The Sheet, by adding the most current at the top of this page, until web site storage constraints force me to delete the oldest edition when a new edition is posted.
Well, the sleds are in Nome and the snow is just a little less deep. Spring is here and the club has prepared itself for another year of sailing.
At the last meeting the club elected officers and decided what to do about promotion and the class.
Elected officers are Paul Willing, Commodore, Steve Anastos, First Vice-Commodore, Joe Offner, Second Vice-Commodore, Janet Flickenger, Secretary, Birgitt Robar, Treasurer, Bob Boyer, Harbor Master, Dave Johnson is Past Commodore.
As for the classes; Roger Buenzow volunteered to take over the class this year and teach it. He would like some boat owners to come forth and help with the on the water portion of the class.
We also decided to not participate in the boat show this year. Volunteers were limited and it was deemed non-essential this year. Instead we are advertising the classes in a community school paper that is sent out to all of Anchorage.
If you are a paying member of this club you are obligated to participate in one of the work parties each year.
To not be too assertive, I'll restate that. All members except for associates and juniors need to be at one of the work parties this year, either the one in the spring or the one in the fall.
To remind people, we do not have any paid employees. So to make the club ready we need the mandatory rule in place. It makes it a whole lot easier, on the members who do show up, to have a large work force.
The first work party is the week before the class, the 17th of May, so it would help to get a large group then, to clean and set up the boats.
Some things to look for this time around are the usual dock maintenance and launching of the boats, cleaning up the club site, and repairing the winter damage. Other things that would be nice to think of doing, and if the budget allowed for it, are things like finishing up the repairs on the shore line or even replacing the boardwalk that once stood by the shore.
A search party usually goes up and assesses the damage the week before. They tally up the supplies we need and send it out on a bulletin to members so they know what tools to bring and things they can donate. The only standard is plywood, hammers, and nails due to the ice fishermen who forget about our docks.
So please come. As our beloved Harbor Master said to me, "We need to make this a community effort, if you want to get anything out of this, it can't be the same twenty people as an organization, organizing to get something organized, so they can organize a work party, by the time they're done organizing they're exhausted from work, they lose their appreciation of the club and they don't get to have any fun... that's what they joined for, right?"
This year is hoped to be a highly active sailing season. With an emphasis on racing. The following is a chart of planned races, we hope people will like to participate.

If there are any questions, replies, or comments about any story in the sheet, or if you believe there is something missing, or if you have questions about Alaska Sailing Club, Inc., please write the club at address on The Sheet mast head, Attn: Matt Flickinger.
The Alaska Sailing Club is saddened by the loss of long time club member, past board member, Gary Claiborn. Gary Claiborn was killed in a plane crash on Sat, July 20, 1996 near Russian Mission, Alaska. The Northern Air Cargo DC-6 crash landed on an island in the Yukon River, there were no survivors.
Gary was a good sailor, an exceptional father, and very good friend of the Alaska Sailing Club. He was one to be counted on when there was work to be done, to show up, tools in hand, and pitch in at the work parties.
Memorial services were held. His ashes were spread from a helicopter by his surviving family, his wife Cathy, and his children of 9 and 12, Roseanne and Travis.
A memorial site had been erected in the place where his trailer was but was taken down and placed on his old mooring line. It will remain open for the rest of the season. Gary will be sorely missed.
Bills must be paid, taxes are coming up and so is the insurance. It's time to renew your membership.
In the mailed version of The Sheet you should have received a rates page with all the correct prices, a rules page, and a release of liability page. Please fill them all out completely and send them in to the club PO Box with the amount due. Follow the Membership info link on the ASC Home Page and print a copy if you still need the forms.
Due to poor management of time and some other distractions, I have not been able to produce the Sheet to my own expectations. But the stories still happen even without a newsletter. So whenever I find space, I will be publishing the stories that would've appeared in the "Lost Additions!"
Club engines are not currently running and in need of maintenance. If you can loan one for the work party or if you know of one for sale please contact the ASC via E-Mail link.
I hope members and non-members alike enjoy my first web page efforts. This site was thrown together rather hastily using limited resources and tools. Future web authoring software upgrades will greatly enhance this basic layout. New pages in the planning stages include: Club History, Photo Album, Governor's Cup List and Club Officer's List. Member phone numbers will not be published on the web, but could be given, with member approval, to prospective members who E-Mail us requesting more information.
The photos included in this edition are from my own JPG files. If any members have photos they would like to see in future issues, please scan them in JPEG format (at Kinko's, etc.) and attach to an E-Mail or snail mail 3.5 IBM formatted diskettes to the club PO box.
E-Mail any links to other sailing web sites you'd like to see posted on the Other Favorite Sailing Links page.
Kudos to Matt for his continuing efforts in publishing the paper version of The Sheet. We'll continue to publish both Web and paper versions. Members who have Internet access can contact us and be deleted from the paper version mailing list to reduce club mailing expenses. As one of my contributions to the club I will post and provide the web site.
See you at the class and Big Lake. Let the summer begin!
