Dave Johnson Wins The 2006 Summer Race Series
By Paul Willing
In conjunction with the resurgence of the Alaska Sailing Club,
we're instituting a new format for the summer race series. In addition to
the winners of the individual events we're tracking total race results for the
summer.
The scoring system is experimental at this point and subject
to change. For now, a premium is placed on participation. I.e. if
you fail to show up or finish we'll give you a bunch of extra points! To
earn the title you'll have to sail and finish every race. 100 points was
used this time as a quick and dirty method to separate the pack.
For example, for the ten races this season, your score
is 525. This indicates you missed 5 races and your score for the remaining
5 totaled 25 points (5 fifth places or a combination of different places).

PORTSMOUTH YARDSTICK Updates for the ASC Fleet
By Paul Willing
Here's the latest updates for our fleet.
Active fleets tend to fluctuate slightly, based on incoming data to USSA.
Due to the late update, these handicaps were applied only to the Governor's Cup
results.

Dave Johnson Takes the Challenge Cup 2006
By Paul Willing
Labor Day morning was foggy again, but with
a BIG difference from the weekend; there was wind! At 8:30 AM I sounded the
siren and called a Challenge Cup race for 9:30 AM.
Slowly, a few sailors came to life and
answered the call. By 9:30 AM the fog had cleared, there was a glorious blue
sky and a nice steady breeze from the north.
For this race the format was a little, well,
challenging:
- Le Mans start off the
dock with skippers running to their boats and waiting crew.
- No handicaps.
- All marks to port.
- Leg 1 upwind to the mark
west of Bird Island.
- Leg 2 reach to the
second mark.
- Finish between the
flagged buoy and the end of the dock.
- And….the first boat to
marks 1 and 2 must round the mark twice.
Dave and Elayne sailed a very fast race in
the Buccaneer and won by 4 boat lengths. Second place went to Bob and Tim
sailing Bob’s Trac 14. Jim took a close third in the club’s red Skipjack.
Taylor and I struggled to a respectable fourth place after some trouble in the
harbor with our Le Mans start.

Tim and Ethan Gould Win 2006 Governor’s Cup
|
|
 |
|
|
|
|
|
By Paul Willing
There was little wind to be found on
Saturday and lots of waiting for wind on shore during this Governor’s Cup race
series. Tim and Ethan showed again just how tough it is to beat a good Skipjack
crew in light air.
But we did have some excellent brew and food
available. The fish fry on Saturday night was outstanding (thanks for the fish
Chris!) and the Steve / Sue Food Wagon Dynamo cranked out the tasty fried fish
and Chris shared his latest culinary delight; succulent Halibut Monterey.
Wind conditions didn’t improve much on
Sunday and we sailed another drifter on Race 2. Before Race 3 in the evening we
feasted on a yummy spread of potluck Italian delights.
Detailed Race Results posted below.
Governor's Cup History table below has been updated. |
|

The Junior James Band set up and wowed the crowd on Saturday
night. Even our neighbors down the shore to the east were intrigued enough to
boat over and join the fun. It was the best session I’ve heard at the club
yet. They played until it was too dark to see their instruments – next time
we’ll have some lights set up to extend things. |

The Sheet - New
Format
By Paul Willing
After nine years of publishing The Sheet
on paper handouts, bulk mailings and our website, we're moving to a new
format - The Blog era has arrived. Now, all club members are the
reporters, photographers and editors. Postings and comments on the
Alaska Sailing Club Blog and The
Sheet are now one and the same.
Periodically, I'll post links here back to the
corresponding blog postings, like these blog links below.

The Importance of a
Newsletter - Collectively, using this new format we'll have a more vibrant,
interesting and timely publication. That's the power of a group blog.
But what do I write about you say? Whatever
strikes your fancy -
-
What do you feel when you sail?
-
What are some of your favorite lake
experiences?
-
What did you learn last weekend about boat
handling, sail trimming, start tactics or mark roundings?
-
What is your favorite type of sailboat?
-
What is your most memorable sailing
experience?
-
Favorite sailing vacation.
-
New ideas for
fun events and races at the club, e.g. last year's Pirate Race.
-
Potluck themes.
-
Cool sailing links you've found on the web.
-
America's Cup and Olympic Sailing events.
For more ideas see excerpts from Mary Well's
Revival chapter of Catamaran Racing for the 90's in the archived

By
Timothy Gould - Vice Commodore, Race Committee Chairman
Greetings ASC,
The Ice Breaker Regatta was a wet and wild ride! I've never
seen such tremendous winds and beautiful weather linked up like they were
for this years' Ice Breaker.
The results:
Small Boats
1st - Elayne Hunter
2nd - Dave Johnson
3rd - Paul Willing
Big Boats
1st - TL Stanbro
2nd - Ben & Birgitt Robar
3rd - Chris Remick
Congratulations to the winners and all the participants.
I wasn't able to see all the action on Saturday, but there
was some very tight groupings on the results - competitive racing. I was
able to get out and race on Sunday - what a blast! The winds were cooking
at about 20kts which made for a very fast ride, major heeling, and water in
the cockpit.
And, yes, there were a couple boats that tipped, and a few
folks that went swimming. And I'm here to tell you that the water has some
warming up to do! Luckily I had some good crew and we got the boat underway
without further incident. We even made a respectable finish!
Please plan to make the next races series, the Firecracker
Regatta, on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of July.
PS - if you are looking for a boat to buy, I might have a
line on a couple nice ones that would add wonderfully to our fleet.
