Yes, it's time once again for the annual Governor's Cup Race Series on the upcoming Labor Day Weekend.
Historically, Big Lake winds are prime this time of year so it's a great time for racing. The format includes nine races total, three races each day - Sat., Sun and Mon. The overall winner takes home the storied trophy and gets their name engraved alongside the past winners.
We'll be using the Portsmouth Handicap system (see table below). This allows different types of boats to compete against each other.
Each race winner will be awarded .75 points, second place 2.00 points, third place 3.00 points, etc. Low score at the end of the series wins the cup.
Since there's so many big boats around the club these days; big boat sailors should stage a race around the islands to determine the fastest big boat in the harbor. I'll try to come up with the Portsmouth numbers to make it a real race.

A grueling work schedule this summer left me zero time to publish any more issues of The Sheet. Dave Johnson's emails to the members have kept communications open and there's always the club's Message Board - although no one is using it lately.
As always, if anyone gets inspired enough to write an article, I'll include it in the next issue.

Let's get ready to work and SAIL! The spring work party is scheduled for Saturday, May 18th from noon until 5:00 pm. There's probably still ice on the lake, so dock placement and boat launching probably won't happen.
But, there's always the obligatory leaf raking and general cleanup. We could move the tin shed, if a new spot can be agreed upon.
One key item - The RL leaks from the swing keel box area. As the water seeps into more of the fiberglass it will become a major problem later. It should be repaired before it goes in the water, so the work party would be the time to do it. It will require some sanding and evaluation to determine the best repair method.
Don't forget a food item for the season's first potluck. See ya at the lake!

Spring is in the air, at least from our twisted Alaskan viewpoint.
It's time to send in those membership applications and dues so we can pay the bills and get ready to sail once again.
We didn't actually issue paper work party vouchers last year so you're on the honor system; if you didn't participate in some real work, send an extra $25.00.

The fall work party on Saturday Sept. 15, 2001 tucked the site in for another winter's nap and also constructed another dock section.
Elections were held with the following results:
Commodore Dave Johnson
First Vice Commodore T. L. Stanbro
Second Vice Commodore Chris Remick
Secretary Karen Remick
Treasurer Birgitt Robar
Harbormasters Tim Gould & Robert Pratt
Past Commodore Steve Anastos
Congratulations to new and re-elected club officers. Let's show them support and work together to make the club a better place.
See you at the lake!

Hi Sailors, one and all. The sailing season will soon be upon us, and I can already taste it! I have heard that the clubhouse is intact and ready to house us for another wonderful summer at the lake (gosh, that sounds good). I have read a couple of sailing magazines this past winter, watched the video and am now ready to be a participant rather than a spectator.
To start off the season, there will be a cookout at Elayne Hunter’s house on Saturday, March 23. (See email and hard copy of The Sheet for address and directions) The party will start at about 4 PM, and I’ll be on the grill cooking hamburgers. We’ll have baked beans, salad, chips and whatever desserts anyone brings. There are some photo albums dating back to 1970 that I’ll bring, and we all should have a good time.
Hopefully the summer race dates can be established at the party and also determine if the club will be offering a sailing class this summer (anyone interested)? If anyone knows potential future club members, invite them to the cook out. We can always use three or four new members. This will be a great summer, filled with sun and sailing, and I hope to enjoy many happy days out at the lake. If anyone has any questions about the party or the club, call me at 344-9058.
