presents
Greetings dearest sailing club members, associates, and affiliated interests. As commodore of the Alaska Sailing Club I would like to personally wish each and every one of us a brilliant New Year. 1999! We only have one season left in the last one thousand years to sail in Alaska. When I evaluate the amount of enthusiasm and new ideas coming from current club members, I have no doubt that 1999 will be a great sailing season for the Alaska Sailing Club.
Speaking of New Year, several members of the club have expressed interest in a Winter Festival at the sailing club site. It would be really great to see everyone's faces for an afternoon (however only for one afternoon just kidding) and engage in some snow-oriented recreational activities involving anything and everything we Alaskans can do on the snow to have fun well, ok, not exactly everything. However, golf, croquet, polo, and bowling on the frozen lake are encouraged.
I have ordered plenty of sunshine for this event; however, Mother Nature has assured me that daylight hours will only be available between 10:30 am and 4 PM (the last week of Jan. that is). The tentative date is for Saturday, Jan. 30. Some ideas include an iceball tournament at 1pm, followed by a potluck at 3:30pm. The musicians and real festivity seekers can decide what will follow the potluck; most likely complete with live bluegrass, folk, and Celtic rythmns, fine homebrewed ales, good food, dancing and good company.
Please contact me personally (907)745-2526 or barley@alaska.net to confirm your interests. Please come one and come all who appreciate sailing and seek to be inspired by some warm winter festivities and friendship. Until then, may the winds rise to greet you. Curtis S. Dunkin. Alaska Sailing Club Commodore; 1998-1999

is setting sail for a new summer and a new class
Our annual classes are about to start and there is still space available. This year we are again offering it through the community school, with two classroom sessions and one pool session in Anchorage and three days at our club site on Big Lake.
At the first two sessions you will be introduced to your instructor, briefed on what you will be doing on the lake, and on the basics of sailing. You will also receive Sailing Fundamentals, an easy to read sailing handbook with illustrations for quick reference.
The third session will be held at the Bartlett pool where you will learn in advance, how to tip and right a boat and practice different situations that you might find yourself in. This will help build your confidence so you can enjoy your weekend at the club.
The forth session will be held on Memorial Weekend, the 23th through the 25th, at Big Lake. Each morning a short class will be held and the instructor will prepare you and will go over what you will learn on the water. You will be able to gain experience and skills during the three days on multiple classes of boats. You will learn how to properly rig the wide variety of boats a the club, basics of sailing, boat etiquette, seamanship skills, and advance sailing techniques. The class will also cover basic racing rules and techniques.
This class is offered through the community school for $80. You can sign up at any Anchorage library until the 15th of May. Yearly club memberships are offered at the end of the class for $300 a family, $200 single, and $75 for a junior. Class fees can be applied to memberships.
3/7/98 Bulletin:
It is that time of year again, summer is just around the corner. We are all starting to dream of sailing weather!
Do you have a sail boat, but don't know how to sail? Have you dreamed of learning to sail and taking off to see the world? Well, the Alaska Sailing Club could be the place for you. We offer classes once a year at our club site on Big Lake, Alaska in the Matanuska Valley. Classes are free to members and their families, or $80.00 if you just want to take the class but are not sure if you are going to like sailing. Class fees can be applied to yearly dues.
We teach in the boats the club owns, or you can take lessons in your own sail boat. The club has a small fleet of Skipjacks, one Laser and two 24 foot daysailers.
We have 300 feet of docks and moorings for the larger sail boats in the water. There is a free public use boat ramp in the area for the larger boats and the sailing club has an electric boat hoist to launch the smaller sail boats.
There are places on the club site to pitch tents for camping, park your camper for the summer, or bring your RV up for the weekend. We offer reasonable dues and may just be the best family recreational value at Big Lake.

Winch Notes
A new winch has been installed on the hoist. It should provide years of reliable service if not abused. Read the instructions and don't allow it to be used as a toy.
